The 10,000 year clock

I

magine a clock, set deep into a mountain.
…Imagine a clock that doesn’t need winding for the next 10,000 years.

…Imagine a clock that will sound a chime melody and this melody will never be repeated once again in the whole 10,000 years.

…Imagine a clock that will be standing there, ticking the universe’s time away thousands of years after you, me and everyone we know are dead and gone.

…Imagine a clock on which our children’s children’s children will be able to tell the time from, or wind up to produce that same day at noon a new chime melody that has never been played before and that will ever be played again in the thousands years to come.

Science fiction?

Hell, no…
This clock is being built as we speak and it is as real as any other tangible thing on earth.

Have a look at this huge, magnificent, inspiring and awe-inspiring monument by the human race for the human race by “The Long Now Foundation”.

This is probably one of the few human enterprises that will have a true universal meaning for the generations to come.

This project is as meaningful and unique as sending the information about human race into the universe, enclosed in the Pioneer 10 and 11 space probes in the 70s.
But this time the final target will be not a possible alien civilization, but our own race. Our own DNA set out to evolve on this planet.

Who will visit this enigmatic and fascinating spot in 10,000 years from now?

Will there be still a human race populating earth?

Will it lie deep in a mountain, forgotten by its children who might have taken their way out into the Galaxy?

Will there be new scientists and visionaries taking the task upon themselves to modify and evolve the clock to make it go undisturbed for another 10,000 years or perhaps for the next 1,000,000?

“The Long Now Foundation” was established in 01996 to creatively foster long-term thinking and responsibility in the framework of the next 10,000 years.

Truly visionary and touching base with the best options for the harmonious evolution and survival of the human race.

I wish more and more people would start working on this kind of projects, instead of trying to construct deadlier weapons, or ruin mankind with the fake mirage of “growth”, while at the same time destroying the very planet we depend upon in order to survive.
